DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD

On June 16th Africa celebrated the Day of the African Child. This year's theme was: Right to protection; Stop violence against children!

The events on this day were attended by 2500 Malawian children. The children participated in various activities. This year's celebration was held on Samaritan's sport's ground. All Samaritan's children were present. Approximately 300 children walked in a march that ended at Samaritan's grounds. This was a national event and many people attended.

There were 2 MC's (master of ceremony) a boy and a girl (children from other schools). The invited children were from around Blantyre , from other schools, from other streetchildren organisations, from orphanages, etc. Some came as far as Mzuzu (North part of Malawi ).

The atmosphere was relaxed and nice. The children performed plays, dances, acrobatics, recited poems, sang songs, etc. They also made poster related to the day's theme: stop child abuse. For photos, please look in the photo gallery!

DAVID JAMES FOUNDATION (DJF) PARTNERSHIP

On July 15 2006, The Samaritan Trust signed a partnership agreement with the David James Foundation. The agreement was personally signed by David James who was in Malawi from 14 July to 17 July.

David James is a famous English goalkeeper on the English football team but he normally plays with the Manchester City Club. David visited Malawi last year and during that visit he also visited Samaritan Trust. He was touched by what he saw in Malawi and he was also impressed with the work of Samaritan Trust. Thus he decided he wanted to support Samaritan through providing injections for capital projects such as the building of a dam to boost Samaritan's agricultural output.

The David James Foundation (DJF) will establish a working farm, a school and a sporting academy in Blantyre , in the south of Malawi . Young people will be taught both academically and vocationally. The farm will seek to establish "best practise" in farming through techniques including improved irrigation, new crops, better use of seeds and fertilizers and selective breeding, to create a model that can be used throughout Malawi .

It will, in the long term, be sustainable and self-financing. DJF will create links between those working in agriculture in Malawi and the UK for trade and skills exchange.

Initially, DJF will work alongside the Samaritan's Trust children's charity in Blantyre , before establishing a new community within the city. The sporting academy will be the only one of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa and will be formed in partnership with colleagues and sponsors in the UK and Malawi .

It will encourage both boys and girls of all backgrounds and abilities to take an active role in physical recreation.
